For I have loved her. . .

Come comrades,
leave me here a while
and when you want me
sound upon the bugle-horn

All around the curlews call
flying over Locksley Hall
In the distance sandy tracts
and hollow ocean-ridges
roaring into cataracts

Many a night
did I look on great Orion
sloping slowly to the West

Many a night the Pleiads
rising through the mellow shade
did glitter like a swarm of fire-flies
tangled in a silver braid

Here about the beach I wandered
while the fruitful land reposed
and dipped into the future
as far as human eye could see

Her cheek once pale and thin
now rosy red and flushing
in the northern night
her spirit deeply dawning
in the dark of hazel eyes
her body shaken with a sudden
storm of sighs—

Feelings feelings fearing
they should do me wrong
for I have loved her
o so long

Based on Tennyson’s ‘Locksley Hall’

Car je l’ai aimée…

Allons, camarades,
laissez-moi ici un instant et,
quand vous aurez besoin de moi,
sonnez du clairon.

Tout autour, les courlis crient,
survolant Locksley Hall.
Au loin, des étendues sablonneuses
et des crêtes océaniques creuses
rugissent en cataractes.

Bien des nuits j’ai contemplé l
e grand Orion s’inclinant lentement
vers l’ouest. Bien des nuits les Pléiades,
surgissant de l’ombre douce,
scintillaient comme un essaim
de lucioles enchevêtrées
dans une tresse d’argent.

Ici, sur la plage, j’ai erré
tandis que la terre fertile
se reposait et plongeait
dans l’avenir, aussi loin
que l’œil humain pouvait voir.

Sa joue, jadis pâle et maigre,
maintenant rose rougeoyante
dans la nuit boréale,
son esprit s’éveillant profondément
dans l’obscurité de ses yeux noisette,
son corps secoué par une soudaine
tempête de soupirs

Des sentiments, des sentiments
craignant qu’ils ne me fassent
du mal, car je l’ai aimé
si longtemps.
