The plain sense of things
the end of the imagination ?
I don’t think so— and certainly
not for a fallen leaf
We imagine all our lives
we envisage and plan and hope
and sometimes pray
and whether we gamble or not
we are always calculating odds
she loves me she loves me not

Stare out from the train
as it passes Deptford Green
where children still skateboard
within office hours
where the ornamental pond
is covered in thick green slime
the trees bare these winter days
and all the time I’m imagining
what will happen next
and where will it end
and I think of all those
I have loved and love still
and wonder what they’re about
imagining all the time so that
nothing inanimate or inert
will ever lay down the law
and condemn me to silence

Thoughts and feelings are
expressions sometimes
voiced sometimes not
and our world a construct
of collective consciousness
so fragile it could pass
in the blink of an eye

Le sens simple

Le sens simple des choses,
la fin de l’imagination ?
Je ne le crois pas – et certainement
pas pour une feuille morte.
Nous imaginons toute notre vie,
nous envisageons, planifions, espérons,
et parfois prions. Que nous prenions
des risques ou non, nous calculons
sans cesse les probabilités :
elle m’aime, elle ne m’aime pas.

Je regarde par la fenêtre du train
qui passe devant Deptford Green,
où les enfants font encore du skate
pendant les heures de bureau,
où le bassin ornemental est recouvert
d’une épaisse vase verte, où les arbres
sont nus en ces jours d’hiver.
Et pendant tout ce temps,
j’imagine ce qui va se passer ensuite,
où cela va finir. Je pense à tous ceux
que j’ai aimés et que j’aime encore,
et je me demande ce qu’ils deviennent.
J’imagine sans cesse, pour que rien
d’inanimé ou d’inerte ne puisse jamais
me dicter ma loi et me condamner au silence.

Les pensées et les sentiments
sont des expressions, parfois exprimées,
parfois non, et notre monde, une construction
de conscience collective si fragile
qu’il pourrait disparaître en un clin d’œil.
