The Inner Voice

Night the colour of a woman’s arm
reaching out to me in the darkness
the soft supple hand stroking my face
The words whispered in my ear
a pool of desire welling up in her eyes
and still the river runs down to the sea
and the gibbous moon drifts gently
in the imagination — but by dawn
it will be gone when the horizon
emerges and the sycamores stand
proudly defiant of the cold eastern wind
and daylight repels the blistered stars
Old poets never die – they live as long
as love and love lives forever in the dream

John Lyons

La voix intérieure

Nuit couleur de bras de femme
tendu vers moi dans l’obscurité,
la main douce et souple caressant
mon visage.
